Coming from a computer nerd who knows a little sci-fi... This is not a new idea at all. The idea that this is plausible is somewhat recent. Coming from an Artificial Intelligence perspective, this is quite feasible at this time. Coming from a 'I buy that that that thing is remotely human looking' perspective, we are a few years off. Coming from a mechanical viewpoint, these are a few years off as well.
I would have to agree with this guy that at our current rate of social maturity, these things are getting close to inevitable. There will be high demand (see our internet problems of today) and therefore immense profits associated with them. So get your sermon ready, because I can see this definitely being in our lifetime.
The actual falling in love will take longer because the AI and the realistic aspects of such robots will take much longer to perfect and get close enough to be believable. I would roughly double his estimates myself, but then again, I don't have a Dutch P.H.D.
Another thing to consider along those lines is the use of prosthetics or replacement parts. In the future, how much of our body will be actual natural home grown stuff.

It really makes you wonder if this kind of technological development signals the beginning of the end of our civilization.
